Tim was excited to show his wife and friend the famous Happy River Steps, a series of steep descents into the Happy River Gorge. Although he had told them stories about the steps, he knew no description could substitute for the experience of actually being there. Even after four years on the trail, the steps still caught Tim off guard. They spent hours winding through a dense spruce forest, when suddenly the trail disappeared into a descent that looked as sheer as a cliff. As they edged closer to the point of no return, an angled slope came into view, plunging precipitously into the ravine.
